Learning as dying

"Paul used 'death and resurrection' as a metaphor for the Christian life and for the shape of ethics. Can the two also be a fruitful metaphor for education? To learn, one must let old ways of thinking, being, and behaving die, for unless they do, they prevent the emergence of new possibilities" (Charles F. Melchert, Wise Teaching: Biblical Wisdom and Educational Ministry, p.303).
